Welcome to Samedan

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, esteemed Colleagues,

Welcome to the 6th International Practical MIS Knee and Hip Training Course in Samedan. Welcome to the Oberengadin.

It is a great honor for me to invite you on behalf of the International Society for Computer Assisted Orthopedic Surgery (CAOS) to the 6th International Practical MIS Knee and Hip Training Course in Samedan/ St. Moritz, Switzerland.

After a successful 5th International Practical Knee Navigation and Hip Training Course last year, our goal this year is to further improve the course. This event will have two focuses: (1) Conventional and Minimal invasive Computer-Assisted Total Knee Arthroplasty “MIS TKA”, and (2) Minimal Invasive Conventional and Computer-assisted Total Hip Arthroplasty “MIS THA”. Well-known European orthopedic surgeons will offer their expertise and will report about current concepts and future trends.

Total Knee Arthroplasty TKA and Total Hip Arthroplasty are major issues and major challenges for the majority of orthopedic surgeons. The latest results on Minimal Invasive Joint Replacements indicate clear advantages in terms of early rehabilitation combined with excellent functional results. We believe that minimal invasive total joint arthroplasty will become a standard procedure in the future. However, proper training and education is a “must” to ensure the success of the MIS technique.

Due to our partnership with Stryker and the great friendships with Prof. Dr. Fabio Catani, Mr. Claudio Belvedere, Meng and Dr. Andrea Ensini, from the Istituti Ortopedici Rizzoli, Bologna/Italy, Prof. Dr. Michael Nogler and Dr. Hannes Behensky, from the Department of Orthopedic of the University of Innsbruck/Austria, PD Dr. Claudio Dora and Dr. Fabian Kalberer, from the Orthopedic University Hospital of Balgrist, Zurich/Switzerland and with the contribution of Prof. Dr. Wolfram Mittelmeier, from the Orthopedic Clinic and Policlinic of the University of Rostock/Germany, Prof. Dr. Marco Schiraldi, from Department of Orthopedic and Traumatology of the Ospedale di Alessandria/Italy, Prof. Dr. Christina Stukenborg-Colsman, from the Department of Orthopedic of the Hannover Medical School/Germany, Ass. Prof. Radek Hart, from the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology of Znojmo/Czech Republic, and of Dr. David Jones, from the Clique du Cours Dillon from Toulouse/France, we will be able to share the enormous pooling of knowledge and experience of these experts.

The scientific program will take place over two days. We will dedicate a fully day to Minimal Invasive Conventional and Computer-Assisted Total Knee Replacement and a fully day to Minimal Invasive Total Hip Replacement.

The first day, Friday 16th of January, 2009, we will focus on CONVENTIONAL AND MIS COMPUTER-ASSISTED TOTAL KNEE ARTHROPLASTY, with the collaboration of Prof. Dr. Fabio Catani and his colleges from the Istituti Ortopedici Rizzoli, Bologna/Italy and of Prof. Dr. Christina Stukenborg-Colsman from the Medical School of Hannover/Germany. Dr. Floris Tichler, Co-Head of the Department of Anesthesia in our Hospital will talk on our experience with “Anesthetic standard procedures in Samedan for MIS TKA”. We will also have the great opportunity to listen to two guest lectures on “Unicompartmental Knee Replacement: Indication, contraindication, mechanics, functional outcome and long-term results” by Prof. Dr. Marco Schiraldi, from the Department of Orthopedic and Traumatology of the Ospedale di Alessandria/Italy and on “Modular Total Knee Arthroplasty: Indication, contraindication, mechanics, functional outcome and long-term results” by Prof. Dr. Wolfram Mittelmeier, from the Orthopedic Clinic and Policlinic of the University of Rostock/Germany. On the first day we will have the possibility to give new instructional lessons and to practice on Non-image-based Navigated Conventional and MIS Total Knee Arthroplasty.

The program of the second day, Saturday 17th January 2009, has been put together in collaboration with PD Dr. Claudio Dora and his college Dr. Fabian Kalberer from the Balgrist University Hospital of Zurich. This part of the course will focus on STANDARD AND COMPUTER-ASSISTED MIS TOTAL HIP ARTHROPLASTY. Experts such as Prof. Dr. Michael Nogler and Dr. Hannes Behensky, from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery of the Medical University Innsbruck/Austria, Dr. David Jones, from Toulouse/France, and Prof. Dr. Marco Schiraldi, from Alessandria/Italy, will talk about basic principles, concepts of conventional versus minimally invasive total Hip Arthroplasties, and about the latest information and tricks regarding Minimal Invasive, Computer-Assisted Primary and Revision Hip Arthroplasty.

There will be also very interesting guest presentations on “Advancements of smart instruments for orthopedic surgery” by Prof. Lutz-P Nolte, PhD, from the Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics and of MEM Research Center of the University of Bern/Switzerland, and on “News and trends in tribology of Total Knee Arthroplasties and Total Hip Revisions” by Dr. Robert Streicher, material scientists of Stryker Orthopedics. On the second day we will also have the possibility to give new instructional lessons and to practice on Non-image-based Navigated MIS Total Hip Arthroplasty.

There will be an instructional live surgery on the first day to demonstrate the main steps of a MIS Computer-Navigated Total Knee Arthroplasty showing our experience while using the Stryker Knee Navigation System and the Minimally Invasive Approach. The second main pillar of this instructional course will be the Two-day workshop on Conventional and Computer-Assisted MIS Total Knee Arthroplasty (Day 1) and on MIS Total Hip Arthroplasty (Day 2) comprising small working groups and experienced instructors in Knee and Hip Surgery.

I hope that this year’s course will again satisfy your requirements. Its success will be based upon the pooling of knowledge and experience of the high-level scientific speakers and the attendees. I am looking forward to welcoming you personally as a participant of the 6th International Practical MIS Knee and Hip Training Course in Samedan/ St. Moritz.
With kind regards,

With kind regards,

Nicola Biasca
Head of the Orthopedic Clinic
